Today on the show, the discussion revolved around natural aphrodisiacs and their health benefits.

It is known that there are some foods that act as natural aphrodisiacs and boost the libido temporarily, but it is a lesser known fact that many of these also help in general wellbeing and health.

RJ Jane introduces the guests for the day, Chef Megha Balasubramaniam , and Dr.Lakshmanan.

A caller asks them if there is any natural aphrodisiac ingredient that helps fight ageing.

Chef Megha says that her secret is that the first thing in the morning, before eating anything, she takes a cup of warm water with honey and lime, and a pod of raw garlic. She feels that this habit is a gives you a great start and energises your day.

Dr. Laxman and Jane talk about how in today’s day and age, work, stress and environmental factors like pollution, lifestyles and imbalanced diet have resulted in the ageing process starting earlier than ever in most young professionals. Dr. Lakshman agrees with Chef Megha. He says that the most important aphrodisiac is found in lime, and it also helps fight signs of ageing. He goes a step further saying that a  fresh fruit diet has enough multivitamins and anti oxidants and is better than resorting to health supplements like many people do these days. He says that for men, testosterone is what drives the libido. More often than not, the initial hurdle is just a mind block. They lose 200 calories during sex as it takes a lot of energy, so it can be physical as well.

Another caller poses a query about which foods enhance a mans virility.

Chef megha responds that the most common aphrodisiacs for men are chilli and chocolate in limited quantities. This releases an enzyme in the body that increases a man’s libido immediately.

Jane asks the Doctor if there are such things as anti-aphrodisiacs that have the opposite effect.

Dr. Laxman says that it is important to eat in lighter quantities. If you’ve had a very heavy meal high in calories, it takes up too much of the blood supply. Even aphrodisiac foods will not act as an aphrodisiac if taken in very high quantities. He adds that some medication can also have a negating effect on aphrodisiacs. Even aspirins and common cold medication can kill the mood.

In conclusion Chef Megha says to enjoy the month of love with your partner, and that it may be a good idea to have a Valentine’s day once a fortnight for yourselves, while Dr. Lakshman thinks that If couples have a good mindset, Valentine’s Day can be all year long!

How Is Water Vital To Your Health?

Today’s show centred around the Importance of water to your health.
Science shows that even 2% drop in body water content can cause symptoms of dehydration. It can also causes fatigue and lethargy.

Today’s special guests are Dr. Priya & Dr. Bhuvaneswari who are both dieticians. They say that water is most important for transportation of nutrients throughout the body and keeping all organs and systems running smoothly. It us ideal to drink 3-4 litres of water per day. But for those who sweat it out, at least 4-4.5 litres would be required as one would have to replace water lost in the body.
A caller shares that it’s good to boil water before drinking. Adding some herbs, jeera or ginger can help digestion.

Another Caller asks about the difference between processed mineral water and regular water, and whether processed water consists of less nutrients.
The Doctors in the house say that mineral water is filtered water but still has its nutrients. it is actually better to drink mineral water. Regular water is fine if it is boiled before drinking.

When it comes to Hot or cold water, both have different benefits.
Hot water helps in weight loss. When honey and lemon are added to it, it helps digestion.
While cold water increases alertness, and fights dryness of skin.

They advise that for weight loss, drink water before eating. Otherwise right after your meal but not during the meal.
Jane then makes an important point that only 1% of the earth’s water is usable to us. And since dehydration can actually kill us faster than starvation, water conservation is essential.

A caller chimes in with some interesting advice to store water in copper vessels overnight and drink it next day as it is said to be good for health.

The next caller, Jeffrey, is a well known fitness trainer in the city. He says that  Water Therapy is a theory that drinking 5-6 litres of water a day can help you you can lose weight that is caused by water retention as the body only retains extra water when it’s not getting enough water intake.

Another caller suggests that a more interesting way to rehydrate is by eating fleshy fruits that have a lot of water content, and starting the day with coconut water.
The last caller has a concern regarding some of his out of town workers who often fall sick when they go back home, as they’ve gotten used to the mineral water in the city and he feels that their immunity has gone down because of this.
The Doctors in the house say that it is only a transition. It can be avoided by drinking only hot water during the transition phase till they get used to the water back home.

In conclusion the Doctors talk about the many important functions of water in our body. It helps energising muscles so it’s good to drink lots of water while working out.  It Keeps the skin glowing and is good for kidneys and prevents kidney stones.

How to Adopt a Brain-Healthy Diet

Brain health is a chief concern these days and diet is a major factor that affects it. The brain, like other vital organs, requires the right amount of nutrition to function properly. A combination of physical fitness, a brain-healthy diet, and social interaction can effectively boost brain health.

The attributes of a brain-healthy diet are that it should promote good blood flow to the brain, should be low in fat and cholesterol and should reduce the risk of hypertension, heart disease and diabetes.

Consume more wild/oily fish and grass-fed meat

Research suggests that eating oily fish may protect you from developing dementia. Some foods may lower inflammation and the risk of brain disease. Almonds, pecans and walnuts are a good source of Vitamin E, which works as an antioxidant. Also try to eat kale, spinach, brussels sprouts, broccoli, beetroot, corn and eggplant.

This is necessary to maintain overall physical and mental health. Eat in moderation and make healthy food choices. Research suggests that middle-aged adults who are obese are twice as likely to develop dementia later in life.

Lower your intake of high-fat and high-cholesterol foods

Research shows that a high consumption of saturated fat and cholesterol blocks the arteries and increases your chances of developing Alzheimer’s disease. However, HDL (good cholesterol) may help protect your brain cells. Consume mono- and polyunsaturated fats, such as olive oil. Grill or bake your food instead of frying it.

However, researchers out of the University of Wisconsin at Madison discovered that our views about stress may actually play a bigger role in its negative effects than the stress itself. In the study, they tracked 30,000 American adults for eight years, and found that people with a lot of stress had a 43% increased risk of dying — but only if they believed stress was harmful. On the other hand, those who had a lot of stress, but didn’t see it as harmful, did not have this increased risk.

2. Your level of life-satisfaction may affect bone density.

A study out of Finland followed women over the age of 60 for 10 years, and asked them to report on their level of life satisfaction. The researchers found that while all women experienced an average 4% decrease in bone density during the duration of the study, there was a 52% difference in bone density loss between those who reported the highest levels of satisfaction versus the lowest levels. In addition, for those whose life satisfaction decreased during the 10 years, their bone density decreased 85% more than those whose satisfaction increased.

3. Positive thinking can increase your immunity to the common cold.

In another study, researchers interviewed participants over three weeks to assess the degree to which they had a positive emotional style. Then, subjects were given a nasal spray of rhinovirus (the cold germ) to see how their bodies would respond. Researchers found that those who had a positive emotional outlook were three times less likely to get a cold than those who had low levels of positive emotions. Interestingly, in a later study, these same researchers found that high levels of stress make it more difficult for the body to regulate the inflammatory response.

4. Optimism is literally good for your heart.

There is a wealth of research about the positive link between optimism and heart health. For example, cultivating optimism and hopefulness is linked to decreased risk of heart attack and stroke. In addition, patients who had heart attacks and were optimistic about their treatment were more likely to be alive 15 years later as compared to those who were less optimistic and hopeful (even with the same severity of illness).

Also, in a recent study of more than 5,000 adults, researchers found that the most optimistic individuals are twice as likely to have ideal cardiovascular health markers (as measured by a variety of factors, including blood pressure, body mass index, fasting plasma glucose and serum cholesterol levels and others) compared to those who are pessimistic.

These findings are just the tip of the iceberg in terms of this growing field of research, but they point to the importance of making sure not to just focus on nutrition and exercise as part of your self-care regimen. To enjoy optimal health, it’s essential to develop an optimistic outlook and engage in happiness-boosting activities each and every day. Your mind and your body will thank you.

Nowadays, it has become a common practice even in Indian households for people to eat their food with cutlery, either spoons or knives and forks, depending on the dish. Your nerve endings in your fingers sense the temperature and texture of the food, thereby preparing your brain for what you are going to be eating and triggering the release of the appropriate digestive juices and enzymes. Additionally, you will never burn your mouth when you are eating with your hands, since your fingers will be able to sense if the food is too hot to eat. When you eat with a spoon or fork, the food goes directly from the plate to your mouth, so you may not realise if it is too hot.

Bacteria: Our body is thought to have a certain kind of bacteria that has protects us from the harmful bacteria in the environment. This bacteria resides in places like our hands, mouth, throat, intestine, gut and the rest of our digestive system. When we eat with our hands, this pattern of bacteria is maintained and we are protected from harmful bacteria. Of course, it is important for you to wash your hands before and after you eat, to ensure that they remain clean and hygienic.

Attention and satisfaction: When you eat with cutlery, it is a more mechanical process than when you eat with your hands. Surprising Health Benefits Of Drinking Tea

You already know that tea can improve your skin and help keep you fit and trim, but did you know that it also does amazing things for your health?

Tea has been around for millennia. Through that time, the Chinese have drunk it for everything from hangover prevention to weight control and common cold reduction. Now, modern scientific research has given us a much better insight into how tea improves health and to what benefit.

True tea, or that from the Camellia sinensis plant, includes white, green, oolong, black and pu-erh. All of them contain antioxidants, catechins, and polyphenols, which positively impact our bodies.

1. Lowered cholesterol

Media-favorite green tea was found to help lower cholesterol, both total serum cholesterol and LDL, according to a meta-study published June 2011 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Most sources suggest five cups per day will provide results, but multiple studies have shown that higher consumption leads to the biggest drop in cholesterol.

Tea is thought to work by inhibiting the absorption of cholesterol from the large intestine. Among the Chinese, pu-erh tea is the most renowned in its ability to lower cholesterol, though only minimal clinical research has investigated this traditional belief.

2. Blindness prevention

Since tea contains high levels of antioxidants, it is not surprising that studies have found them in eye tissue. In fact, drinking tea can help to prevent the blindness caused by cataracts (the clouding of the lens inside the eye), said a 2001 study.

3. Reduced cortisol levels

Cortisol is the stress hormone that contributes to belly fat and makes your skin age quicker. One recent study suggested four cups of tea per day may make your cortisol levels spike less.

If you’re looking to have cortisol levels drop back down to normal faster after a stressful event, a 2006 study suggested daily consumption of tea for six weeks will do just that (as compared to placebo).

Both studies found that tea consumption may reduce the impact of cortisol, thus slowing the aging process and preventing the widening of your mid-section.

4. Anti-inflammatory

Active compounds in tea can help to lower levels of inflammation and inflammatory reactions. According to Dr. Mark Hyman, inflammation is connected to almost every modern ailment, including arthritis, metabolic syndrome, and depression. Inflammation can also cause you to retain water and look puffy, so a few cups of tea can help you look and feel thinner.

Want a healthier heart? A 2007 study indicated the lower inflammation levels resulting from green tea consumption may help to protect against cardiovascular disease.

5. Increased memory, focus & concentration

Extensive research has shown that the combination of caffeine and L-Theanine, a naturally-occurring amino acid found in tea, improves reaction time and memory, while increasing focus and concentration (think of monks meditating).

Go for a cup of tea — perhaps white tea — before a meeting when you need to be sharp, or drink it during a test for increased concentration and focus.

6. Anti-allergen

With spring coming up, now is time to start searching for your favorite tea. Why? A 2007 Japanese study found that the tea polyphenol, EGCG, may be helpful for reducing pollen allergies. Tea may also reduce allergic response through quercetin, a flavonol naturally-occurring in tea, which is known to mitigate histamine response.
