Tips for beating depression

If one wishes to recover from depression, they need to take action. However, it is a Catch-22 situation when one does not wish to take any steps in order to get out of the depression for being in a depressed state of mind. When one is depressed they do not want to think of the things that they need to do. Even if they realise the need to take action, even getting up and taking a bath, eating food or meeting friends seem like an effort for them. The activities that can help one to get out of depression are the things that one finds most difficult to do. However, as such things are not impossible, one needs to culminate the energy and the motivation to do the following simple activities which will help one to get out of depression.

Cultivating Supportive Relationships

The first step that needs to be taken in order to recover from depression is to start off with small goals. As one starts with small goals and achieves them, they will slowly build from there. Even if one feels exhausted, they can take a short walk round the block or make a phone call to feel better. In order to get out of depression it is important to cultivate supportive relationships. It is very difficult to get out of a depressive state if one is alone. Getting social support plays a great role in helping to lift the fog of depression. Truth about eating disorders

Today’s guest was Ms. Ravina Jain, an image consultant and nutrition expert.  The discussion revolved around the topic of eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia, their causes, complications and ways to overcome them.

It was discussed that more often than not, what causes eating disorders are the unrealistic standards of beauty that we see in the media. This “size zero” culture has had an unfortunate and lasting effect on society and has fed the insecurities of young people who unwittingly aspire to achieve this status. What they do not realise is that in pursuing this goal, they compromise their health to a great extent.

The guest made the comparison of the “size zero” culture to the fairness cream industry. It is a culture that says a person’s appearance, be it colour, or size, has a direct effect on their success in life. It says that being fair and waif thin is something to aspire to. This has had a lasting and damaging effect on the youth, and society in general.

While the RJ spoke about a friend who had lost 20kg on a diet of just water, honey and chilli powder, Ravina recounted a story of a girl who went on a fast, drinking only water for weeks, which resulted in complications with her intestines. Her diet turned out to be fatal.  They stressed on the fact that there are no short cuts to fitness or weight loss. It is important to stay fit and healthy, but the best way to achieve this is to consult a fitness expert and nutritionist, who will be able to create a tailor-made plan.

It was also discussed that there are some body types, which even while healthy, may not be able to achieve the desired look because they are built a certain way. The advice given to these people is to accept themselves as they are, and to work on their confidence. There are few people who are able to achieve this, and carry themselves off with grace and style at any size, and still stay healthy.

Ravina concluded that the most important part of staying healthy, was staying happy and confident. It is not a matter of achieving a certain weight, but achieving a certain state of complete health.

Why Breakfast Is the Most Important Meal of the Day

Some people skip breakfast in an effort to lose weight, but that’s not a good idea. It can backfire.

Skipping meals, especially breakfast, can actually make weight control more difficult. Breakfast skippers tend to eat more food than usual at the next meal, or nibble on high-calorie snacks to stave off hunger.

Some studies suggest that people tend to add more body fat when they eat fewer, larger meals than when they eat the same number of calories in smaller, more frequent meals.  Other studies show that weight management can be equally effective without breakfast .

Why Kids Need Breakfast

While adults need to eat breakfast each day to perform their best, kids need it even more. Their growing bodies and developing brains need regular refuelling often, from food. When kids skip breakfast, they don’t get what they need to be at their best.

How to stay hydrated through the day

Drinking enough water is easier said than done, because even though you know that you should drink at least a litre of water every day, it is difficult to remember to do so. Here are some clever ways that you can use to trick yourself into drinking more water.

Set a goal

Before you start, you should have an approximate idea of how much water you already drink every day and how much more you need to drink per day.

Bond with your bottle

Go out and buy a water bottle that you really like. Chances are that if you really like your bottle, you will be excited to drink water from it and less likely to forget to do so. It can be a cool colour or have a cute picture on it, whatever appeals to you most.

Carry water with you

When you’re out, you may not find water when you need it and you may not always be able to stop and buy it. Instead, make it a point to carry a bottle of water with you every time you leave the house. If you have a bottle with you you’re more likely to drink from it.

Anyone can be confident with a full head of hair. But a confident bald man – there’s your diamond in the rough

Bald is the new sexy!!!!

Today’s guests were a professor from MCC and a top man from Event Genie.

Professor says being bald gives one a new identity , “God made just a few perfect heads! The rest he covered with hair. I look different and I make use of it! I realized I was going bald when I was 25 years old.”

Another guest tells us that he comes from from a family of sexy bald men !” My father, granddad, everyone lost hair early. There was no point in having sparse hair, so I decided to have a nice clean shiny style.”

Jane says that she has noticed  that bald people dress well ! She also pulled out a couple of quotes, “We are all born bald baby!” ” Anyone can be confident with a full head of hair. But a confident bald man – there’s your diamond in the rough” – by Larry David

The guests discussed how hair transplant & product companies make a big deal about it. Youngsters should not lose confidence looking at such ads, confidence comes from within and not from the amount of hair one has. It’s good to enjoy the bald style, and not try too many different things and constantly worry about it!

They felt that guys tend to get shy and do not talk about it. It’s a psychological bias, just like being fair or dark. The hair growing products are dealt with in a similar manner to products that promote fairness. There is little difference in the fact this too projects a bias.

The best solution is to not be bothered about it ! Be as popular as you can be.  Bald men tend to concentrate more on their dress and not on their hair, thats probably why they dress better ! One shouldn’t bother too much about your baldness or your clothes, it’s about being comfortable with who you are !

A caller is all excited about the topic and says her husband is completely bald and he looks very sexy! She claims it’s a sign of wisdom! Men look nice when they are confident, and there are so many advantages, such as no shampoos. A caller who claims he is a budding baldie tells us that he was bothered about his baldness until tuned into the show ! And now he has nothing to fear !

Looks like the girls are loving the baldness, concluded Jane. Going bald is definitely not a disease!

Calorie Counting Isn’t The Answer To Lasting Health

You’ve probably seen this type of statement on food packaging or in commercials. It’s a statement that gives the impression of healthy eating to foods that are rarely healthy. Do you buy foods based on their calories per serving? If yes, it’s time to stop!

When you consume food, you are in fact consuming calories which your body needs to produce energy. If you’re consuming a high amount of calories but not burning them off, they will be stored. An excess of stored calories can be converted to fat over time and this can lead to weight gain.

Many moons ago, the food and diet industries used this scientific fact to create the calorie counting epidemic. It wasn’t about what you were eating, but the amount of calories you were eating. So basically you could eat whatever you wanted as long as you stayed within your body mass index (BMI) daily calorie requirement.

Calorie counting gave people a sense of control: if they knew they could only have so many calories per day and the labels on their food told them exactly how many calories per serving, it seemed like a foolproof way to lose and maintain a healthy weight. Many of you, including myself, became so focused on the number of calories in our food that we forgot to read the actual ingredients.

Fast forward to today.

We put calorie labels on all packaged food (as is required by law), but most of that packaged food is made up of junk ingredients. Even with everything we know about processed food, many people still look at the calories per serving rather than the ingredients.

Let’s use one of those low-calorie, frozen dinners, as an example. The “beef” in a low calorie beef dinner is referred to as “beef product” (beef, water, dextrose, modified corn starch, potassium chloride, sodium phosphates and artificial color). The list of artificial ingredients in a product like this goes on and on. “Low in calories and high in crap,” is what the label should read.

Guess what happens when processed food makes up a majority of your diet? Not only are you depriving your body of essential nutrients, you’re also filling up on empty calories, leading to more cravings which ultimately leads to poor food choices.

Are you ready to stop counting calories? Are you ready to change your relationship with food? Here is my two step action plan to help you break free from the calorie counting cycle.

1. Add more plant-based food into your diet.

This is key to feeling healthier and happier. Stock up on vegetables, fruits, seeds, nuts and legumes. These plant-based foods will give you the essential nutrients you need to fuel your body and mind with living calories your body will actually use to keep you energized.

The more plant-based food you eat on a daily basis, the less likely you are to crave junk food. I especially recommend adding a tablespoon of hemp seeds to all your meals. They will add extra nutrients to your meals and help satiate your appetite.

2. Get in the habit of reading ingredients first!

Forget the calories per serving — skip right to the list of ingredients. If the first few ingredients on a label are words you can’t pronounce, you probably want to avoid eating that product. Steer clear of products that are high in sodium, sweeteners, high fructose corn syrup, artificial colors and processed grains (to name a few).

Notice I call them products and not food? Everything you need to know is on those labels. Remember: you are what you eat! If you eat healthy most of the time and get regular exercise, you’re going to live a better quality of life. It’s not about obsessing over a number. It’s about feeding your body the nutrients it needs to stay strong and thrive!

Milk Fats Are Healthier Than You Think

If you have been sticking to low-fat or fat-free milk in order to maintain a healthy diet, it may be time to revisit your beliefs. New research shows that milk fats can help prevent obesity and lower the risk of cardiovascular disease.

 Prevention of obesity
A study published by a Swedish team of researchers shows that middle aged men who consumed high-fat milk and other fatty milk products like butter and cream, were less likely to become obese than men who rarely or never ate high-fat dairy. The study was conducted over a period of twelve years, and adjusted for factors like consumption of fruit and vegetables, smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity, age, education, and profession.

Lower risk of cardiovascular disease
The European Journal of Nutrition compiled 16 studies that were related to milk fatsand their effect on health. It was initially believed that consuming milk fatsincreased the risk of cardiovascular diseases. The team that reviewed these studies concluded that milk fats did not increase the risk of heart disease in any way. In fact, since they lowered the risk of obesity, they indirectly lowered the risk of heart disease as well.

Nutritional content in milk
Studies have shown that it does not matter which type of milk you drink (skim milk, 2 percent or whole fat milk) as long as you drink two glasses of it every day, since it reduces the chances of you having a heart attack or stroke, according to a British study. While milk does contain plenty of unsaturated fats, regardless of which type of milk you drink, each glass still contains more than a third of your daily requirement of calcium, eight grams of protein and plenty of other nutrients like potassium, phosphorous and Vitamins D and B.

Foot care tips for winter

Imagine someone who is perfectly put together, right from hair and make-up to clothes and accessories. Shift focus to their feet and horror of horrors! The feet don’t seem to belong to the same person.

Your feet endure the most while carrying your weight around, being cramped in fancy, high-heeled footwear and the changing weather. Winter is the time when they take a beating. Dry skin eventually leads to cracked heels. And, ignoring the cracks will only worsen the situation. One must care for their skin and moisturise it but in winter, additional care is needed.

Removing rough skin
Rough, dry, chafed skin looks grayish and dull. Removing it is the first step towards good skin because moisturising dead skin does not serve any purpose.

Warm bath for soft skin: Soak your feet in a small tub filled with warm water. Remember you must use warm water and not hot water. Extreme temperatures aid in drying skin more. Add a little shower gel to cleanse your feet while they are soaking. Don’t have time for a luxurious soak? Do this while you are bathing. Soaking your feet in warm water for 10 minutes softens the skin and the rough patches. Towel dry your feet. Don’t rub them roughly.

Removing dead skin: While your feet are still damp, rub the heels with a soft pumice stone. Do not use the metal foot scrubbers that are available in the market. Don’t get frenzied while rubbing. The key is to be gentle. Rub until you see some of the rough skin sloughed off.

Foot scrub: Mix a little sugar with olive oil. You can also add a few drops of mint or tea tree essential oil. Start scrubbing your feet with the mixture in circular motions. The granular sugar will exfoliate your feet ridding it off the dead skin. Olive oil will soften the skin and moisturise it in the process. Just make sure you are not too hard while scrubbing your feet or it will defeat the purpose of the scrub.

Foot Masks: After getting rid of the dead skin, it is very important that your feet be wrapped in a nourishing mask. You will need an overripe banana. The blacker the skin, the better. Mash the banana along with the juice of one lemon. Apply a thick layer of the mask all over your feet and wrap with kitchen foil paper. Keep it on for 10 minutes and wash off with lukewarm water. Since this mask can be quite messy, it would be better to do this in the bathroom or spread a newspaper on the floor.

Moisturising skin
Before you turn in for the day, make sure you slather a thick coat of petroleum jelly or olive oil or a thick cream on your feet and wear a pair of old socks. If your heels are riddled with deep cracks, you should follow this tip religiously. You can also wrap your feet with gauze tape after moisturising it. Another way of getting rid of cracked heels is mixing glycerine, lemon juice and a little sugar together. Apply this concoction on your feet, cover them with socks and leave it on overnight. This will also help lighten ugly scars left by shoe bites.
