Why Exercising Is Great For Your Brain, No Matter How Old You Are

We’ve all come to accept the notion that our brain will shrink as we age. And nowhere in the brain is this decline more impactful than in the hippocampus, the memory center, one of the primary brain areas that’s first to decline in Alzheimer’s disease.

Researchers measuring the size of the hippocampus show a clear correlation between shrinkage of the hippocampus and declining cognitive function. So, at least as it relates to the hippocampus, size does matter.

However, new and exciting research challenges the notion that this is just a natural part of the aging process and shows that we have the potential to actually grow new cells in this vitally important area of the brain. We can actually expand the hippocampus in size and enhance memory function.

High blood pressure is a major public health problem in India

High blood pressure (BP) is called as a ‘silent killer’ as it often shows no symptoms. It is a major public health problem in India and its prevalence is rapidly increasing among both urban and rural populations. Lifestyle changes are important for preventing and treating high blood pressure.

Though essential hypertension remains somewhat mysterious, it has been linked to certain risk factors.  Kidney is a major risk factor for high BP. It has been found that about 7 in 10 people who have their first heart attack have high BP. About 8 in 10 people who suffer their first stroke are found to have high BP. About 7 in every 10 people with chronic heart failure have high BP. The risk factor increases with age.

Dr. Vijay Chandra Reddy says that one should start checking their BP from their 20’s and should get checkups regularly. Hypertension can be prevented by a healthy diet and active lifestyle. It is better to prevent it than to treat it with medicines. Healthy changes include maintaining a normal weight, exercising regularly, quitting smoking, limiting alcohol consumption, reducing sodium (salt) intake and increasing potassium intake.

A caller asked if it is common for a woman to get high BP after pregnancy. Doctor said the pressure increases during pregnancy but it comes back to normal after delivery. If the condition continues, one has to consult their physician.

When a caller asked if there will be any side effects if one start the medication at an early age , the doctor advised him to follow a healthy diet and exercise regularly for few months. If the condition improves, medication is not necessary. If not, then he can take medication after consulting with his doctor.

Another caller asked how he could deal with the side effects of the medication. The doctor replied that all allopathic medicines have side effects but most are reversible. It is best to inform the doctor about the side effect and discuss a way to reduce it. Anger and stress can lead to hypertension. He also mentions that his favorite movie is ‘Anger Management’ by Peter Segal. The Doctor concluded by saying that the activities he follows to relax and reduce stress are doing Yoga, Gardening and playing with his pet to deal with hypertension.

For many of us, back pain is an unavoidable discomfort. But we may have more control over it than we think. Back pain is one of the most common complaints among both men and women. It is also a common reason for absence from work.

Dr. Shankar discusses on the causes and reasons for back pain, discomfort and lower back problems with us and gives us simple tips and tricks to avoid or manage the pain.

He says, Slipped discs are one of the commonly faced problems and a clinical examination is a must to judge the severity of the problem. Since the Spine nerves are very delicate, it’s better to do an MRI to check that the nerves are not damaged before starting on any treatment.

One of the first few callers said he has been suffering from sciatica and asked if practicing yoga alone could help him with his problem. Dr. Shankar advised the caller to do a nerve conduction study and an MRI and based on the diagnosis of his physiotherapist he can ask his yoga practitioner for few strengthening exercises.

Another caller complained about on and off lower back pain. The doctor advised that a simple x-ray and a bone density test would throw some light on the root cause of the issue. He also told her to self check if the pain is appearing only after sitting or sleeping in a particular position.

When we keep our body posture right, back pain can be avoided most of the times. He prescribes women to enrich their calcium intake by taking 2-3 glasses of milk every day. Older women should take regular calcium supplements to prevent osteoporosis.

When the back pain is bothering you for more than 6months, then you will have to consult your physician. Some young people might suffer stiffness in their backs in early mornings. It might be a symptom of arthritis of the spine. It might not be permanent but however the severity needs to be diagnosed by a physician.

As we all know, Vitamin D is very important for both bones and muscles. Any deficiency of this vitamin might result in weakness and pain. Though there are many supplements available in the market, the best and the simple solution to gain this vitamin is to go out for a few minutes of walk in the sun.

How Stress Affects Mental Health

When someone is under chronic stress, it begins to negatively affect his or her physical and mental health. The body’s stress response was not made to be continuously engaged. Link between Stress & Mental Health

Although many studies have shown a link between stress and mental health problems, the reason behind this connection has remained unclear. Recent research from the University of California, Berkeley, has discovered new insight into why stress can be so detrimental to a person’s psyche.

Previous research has found physical differences in the brains of people with stress disorders, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and those without. One of the main distinctions is that the ratio of the brain’s white matter to gray matter is higher in those with stress-related mental disorders compared to those without.

People who experience chronic stress have more white matter in some areas of the brain. The UC Berkeley study wanted to find out the underlying reason for this alteration in the brain composition.

3 Tips To Rethink Exercise In Your 40s

You’ve heard it a thousand times: 50 is the new 40, 40 is the new 30, and so on and so on. That’s all fine and good when you’re talking about how to dress, going out to see a band, or how you feel in general. But when it comes to exercise, you need to act your age.

When I was in my 20s and 30s, I was obsessed with exercise. I was a triathlete, I ran like there was no tomorrow. It was all about competition, speed, how many miles I could get in, how many calories I could burn. I did yoga and Pilates to balance the hardcore running I was doing. I didn’t need anybody to motivate me. I just did it myself. I got myself up and out the door every day, no problem.

But now, at 45, my body just can’t take all that pounding of running, and I’m not going to risk injuring myself to try to keep up with what I was doing in my 20s. Nowadays, exercise is more about creating strength, stability and flexibility than burning calories or competing. Now, I have to ask myself, Can I do it at all?

The truth is, as you transition out of your 20s and 30s, you need to drop the no pain, no gain mentality. You have to listen to your body and accept that, as you get older, you will benefit in the long-term from accepting that you have limitations and they should not be ignored.

Now, instead of running my ass off and competing with myself and everyone around me, I don’t run at all. I like to spin or take a cardio-sculpting class or do CrossFit. Instead of yoga and Pilates balancing out the attack of intensive cardio, they’re a regular part of my fitness routine. Exercise is about having fun.

In my 40s, I find that I need someone to push me, to keep me motivated through a workout. If I don’t have classes to go to, I am lost in my week, thinking, What am I going to do?

Remedies for back pain

Use your head, wear a helmet!

Head injury or a traumatic brain injury can strike unexpectedly to anyone of us. Head injuries result in more deaths in young adults than any other cause.  It has been found that in India one person dies every 10 minutes due to head injuries .  Today we are going to address the common causes and prevention of head injuries .

Our Guest doctor Dr.Chandrashekar says that Tamilnadu tops the list in the highest number of road accidents in our country. It’s not surprising that the most common among this is the two wheeler accidents where the pillion rider is more seriously hurt as they don’t wear helmets. Only when both riders wear helmets such head traumas can be prevented.

One of the callers pointed out that only when the punishment is severe , the riders would take such law enforcements seriously and paying fine is not going to make much difference. While another caller felt that most riders do not have road sense and they do not realise that reckless driving could not only injure them but also affect the people around them.

The doctor says that 50% of these head trauma victims are the bread winners of the family and this affects the family financially and emotionally. He says the possible injuries may vary from minor abrasions, scalp lacerations to unconsciousness or even lead to coma if one fails to wear helmet.

There are only two major reasons that riders give for not wearing helmet. One being the heat of the city and the other one is hair fall. But these reasons are not significant excuses for the riders when their life and health is at risk.

Dr. Chandrashekar points out few to-do’s while driving to avoid such injuries:
– Make sure your helmet is strapped properly.
– If in a car, wear your seatbelts.
– Always be considerate to pedestrians.
– Follow Road Rules.
– Avoid Drinking & Driving.
– Drive Slow and Be Safe!

People need to set an example for each other. Parents need to show their children by example too.
